Hans Strätz (left) and Franz Fremuth (right) founded the Optische Werke Passau.

A FLOURISHING

COMPANY

The optical plants already employ more than 150 people and deliver their eyewear as far away as Sudan.

 

1954

VICTIMS OF

MOTHER NATURE

The great flood of July 1954 flooded the Optische Werke buildings.

 

1956

FIRE,

FIRE!

The elements strike again: A large fire destroyed the factory buildings, leaving no glasses behind.

 

1959

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

FOR TOMORROW

The new OWP plant in Spitalhofstraße was built: At ground level and safe from the Danube.

ANYTHING

GOES

In the 1960s, extravagant glasses made of celluloid were created, reflecting the zeitgeist of a generation.

AT HOME IN THE WORLD

Subsidiaries in France and the Netherlands were founded.

OWP DESIGN,

The “OWP design” collection allows for development within the premium segment.

NEW IDEAS

In the eighties, glasses experienced a revolution: The visual aid becomes a fashion accessory.

OWP HAS

ARRIVED

OWP established itself as one of the leading brands of high-quality eyewear fashion worldwide.

The licensed brand Mexx is launched and is followed by the segments Mexx Sun, Youth and Kids.

PASSION

The new OWP competence center creates the perfect environment for our enthusiasm for eyewear.

STRENESSE BY GABRIELE STREHLE

Straightforward, high quality and noble: OWP launched the licensed collection Strenesse and equipped the national football team with sunglasses for the World Cup.

The OWP collection gets a new look along with the company profile.

WEST

The subsidiary OWP USA Inc., based in Boston, is founded and opens up access to the largest optics market in the world.

EYEWEAR FOR

INDIVIDUALISTS

With Metropolitan Eyewear, OWP expanded its portfolio with a self-confident brand for the free spirits of the big city.

INTERNATIONAL

DESIGN CONTEST

OWP organizes a design competition for students for the first time: A number of entries from 27 countries produced three creative prize winners.

66 YEARS

WEDDING IN PASSAU

op Couture GmbH became part of the OWP Group. Two traditional companies that complement each other perfectly are now growing together.

LOGISTICS?

LOGICALLY!

A modern logistics center and warehouse for the OWP Group was built in Passau-Heining.

MEXX

COMES HOME

After 20 years of successful licensing, OWP was able to acquire the worldwide brand rights for eyewear from Mexx International.

 

2018

THE THIRD

DESIGN CONTEST

For the third time, OWP selected three winners from several hundred creative eyewear designs submitted by design students from around the world.

 

2020

A NEW

FAMILY MEMBER

The OWP Group has expanded through the acquisition of another long-established company, Dr. Beck GmbH, and has thus broadened its portfolio with the brands FLAIR and bx. eyewear.
